Mesopotamia By Allie B.

Have you ever wondered about the first civilizations? Who lived there what were they like? Well I had those questions until I watched an amazing movie that told me about Mesopotamia, or “between the rivers”. There were many city-states in Mesopotamia, one was Sumer. The Sumerians lived in homes built of sun-dried bricks and straw. The Sumerians had a sort of “home” for their gods called a Ziggurat*, where they worshiped their 3,000 gods! The Sumerians also believed in the after-life and the servants were so respectful, that they drank a poison potion to travel with their owners to the after-life. And incredibly most Sumerians died before the age of 40! But, surprisingly they ate a healthy diet of milk, cheese, dates, and much more. The Sumerians are credited with inventing some of the most important things such as, the wheel. Initially used for pottery but was turned on it’s side and used for carts and chariots. The arch, used for bridges. Then there was their writing used to record their spoken language. This writing was called Cuneiform*which is triangles used to form words. They used clay pallets and writing utensils. Imagine having to write a whole essay with no computer! School, some people hate it, some love it, but the Sumerians invented it. At the time only boys went to school while the girls stayed home. The schoolteachers were very harsh and whipped the children if they performed poorly or misbehaved. Some children probably got whipped over five times a day. I don’t know about you but I like modern day school a lot better. What do you think of Mesopotamia? Did this paper inspire you to learn more about ancient lost civilizations? I hope it did! I hope you liked visiting the land “between the rivers”.

Dances and Activity Nights by Kelley and Brianna

Dances and Activity nights By Kelley and Brianna

Music! dancing! eating! and just having fun! Those are just a couple of words that describe what goes on at the dances and activity nights at Porter school. Dances are when grades 6th through 8th go into our schools cafetorium, and while a DJ is playing music, everyone is getting their groove on. The DJ always plays awesome songs. If you want to hear a song that has not played yet, you can request one and eventually the DJ will play it. The last song that is played is always slow, and it is called stairway to heaven. At this time almost everyone is dancing with eachother. On the other hand, activity nights are when grades 5th and 6th go into the gym and play either basketball, vollyball, or soccer. The cafetorium where the dancing is held is closed but in the gym the radio is playing. To get into both of these events you have to pay either five dollars or bring two cans and three dollars. You can also, buy food, candy and drinks. On September 16th tragedy struck…………just kidding that was when our first dance was. Every student in middle school was running around, dancing, and having soooooooooo much fun. One event that 5th through 8th grade is looking forward to is the Mascarade Halloween Ball. The Mascarade Halloween Ball is when the students dress up in costumes and dance like the monsters!!!!!!! At this event a costume contest will be held. The winner will receive a small but rewarding prize. The way we will choose this winner is the students will take a poll on whos costume is the best. Since our schools cafetorium is too small for everyone in grades 5th through 8th, the ball will be in the gym. The ball will be held from 6 to 8 ‘oclock, so everyone has enough time to dance and have the time of there lives. To get into the ball you have to be wearing a costume and bring in two dollars for the school.
