The students in Room 613 have been working hard, studying different types of governments and economies, culture and ethnic groups, majority and minority groups, physical and human geography, and most recently investigating Google Earth and the workings of Global Positioning Systems (GPS). In one activity, we ran a relay race around the school track while carrying a hand held GPS and learned that one lap of the track is a distance of .25 mi. This distance was calculated with the help of 4 satellites 12,000 miles above the earth. Incredible!

After discussing the differences between government types such as dictatorship, monarchy, and representative democracy, the students produced some very creative comic strips depicting each type.

The students are also practicing study skills by creating flashcards to study key terms for their next test. We write a key word on the front of the card, then write two definitions on the back. One definition is copied from a source (notes, text, etc.) and the other definition is written in their own words. We also include pictures on the flash cards to engage both the linguistic and visual parts of the brain.
